Assistance with visually impaired and fully sighted children!

When my first daughter was born, nearly 24 years ago, all the stops were pulled out by social services, et al, to make sure that all her needs were met, as a visually impaired child.  However, when I had my second daughter, over 17 years ago, there was no help, at all!  She was fully sighted!

I found some aspects of this situation almost harder than with the first child.  How far should you sit a fully sighted child away from a TV or a book etc., I had no problems with this with the first, as her sight was just like mine - so what worked for me, should, in theory, work for her!

Do you think the help that was given for the first should have been given for the second, bearing in mind that my sight had not changed?  Do you have any further comments?

    Hi Cindy,

I think that is a very interesting area for discussion!

Its probably the case that in the above example, it was YOU that needed the support and not your 2nd child.  Its something that hasn't crossed my mind - but that's maybe because my wife is fully sighted and is the person who is at home with the FOUR kids more often than me.

Oddly though, I've never found either of us uttering the words "don't sit so close to the TV" even though we have a 42" screen, and they are all fully sighted.  I was told that all the time when I was a lad!  It just meant that I never actually say anything Smile

Do you think there were any developmental implications either way?
